Joy Mehlomakulu started the business in 2008 after buying an existing residential home and converting it into a guest house. She successfully applied for a mortgage bond for the property and then used her own funds to renovate the property. The purchase of the property has been the biggest financial outlay so far. The business provides both short and long term accommodation facilities to tourists and other guests visiting Johannesburg either for leisure or for business purposes. The business also applied successfully for consent to operate in a residential area.
- Joy Mehlomakulu is a qualified social worker and holds a Master’s degree. She obtained her qualifications in South Africa and in the United States of America. She has additional qualifications in the form of a Master’s Diploma in Human Resource Management from Rand Afrikaans University University and a Certificate in Business Management from Wits University. In 2015, Joy Mehlomakulu was accepted into Raizcorp, a prosperaror (incubator), with the intention of sharpening her skills in managing her business more efficiently and effectively. She graduated at the end of 2015. She has a 75% shareholding stake in the guest house.
- Thato Mehlomakulu, son to Joy Mehlomakulu, is a 27 year old male who is studying towards a Communication Science qualification through the University of South Africa. He is also employed by Kwa – Bungane Guest House as a Sales and Marketing Director. It was imperative for the company to embark on succession planning and as a result, Thato was incorporated as a shareholder and he enjoys a 25% stake in the company.
